Find ways for children to make money when they are too young to have a regular job can seem like a challenge. But with a little thought and a touch of imagination, young entrepreneurs around the world are coming up with creative ways to make money.

Years ago, before compulsory education laws and child labor, it was so normal for children to work alongside adults and the very thought of having to hunt for ways for children to make the money would have been ridiculous! Often, the money given by children was all that stood between a family and hunger.

We live in better times now. There is usually plenty to eat, and we expect our children to concentrate on their studies.

Now do not get me wrong, I'm for education!

However, the current education system in the Western world and is designed to produce good employees that there are real risks in leaving the financial education of your child's so-called "experts". Remember that all teachers, all inspectors, all directors, all the people who write the curriculum guidelines, and all politicians who make laws on education are themselves employees. Start early as entrepreneurs

During my three girls were aged between nine and twelve years, they started a business of breeding rats. They borrowed the initial capital from us, paid interest of their pocket money and bought their breeding stock of rats.

After a few months, there were rats baby rolling off the production line on a scope every 6-12 weeks. Within 12 months, they had repaid the initial loan and the company has made profits.

After another 12 months, they were tired of cleaning cages every weekend, they decided to leave their remaining rats withdraw their reproductive assets without being replaced. Eight or nine months later, the last rat died of old age, and young filmmakers gathered one last time to liquidate the company.

I think it's a cute story, and I say regularly (probably more often than I should, but hey, they are only cute for a short time).

When I told this story, I found that people are interested. They wanted to know how we taught our children to run a business. How we got our children to want to run a business. How did we get our children interested in making money at all, besides, at such a young age.

I think these are the wrong questions to ask, actually. We should be asking questions like - why not all children of that? What stops the vast majority of children turn their creative minds to the question of how to make money they need to buy things they want? Why is it so strange, in that time to see a 12-year old trading to be paid for their services?

There was a time not so long ago, when 95% or more of the population were employed, whether on farms, in detail, or in cottage industries. Children grew up surrounded by trade, looking at the exchange of valuable services for money, because the process of negotiating for profit, ingestion of the principles of customer service with milk from their mothers.

These days, most people depend on someone else entrepreneurship to generate revenue in a company to pay them a salary, either directly, by working for a company in the private sector or indirectly, by working for a government funded by a tax on the private sector and its employees.

With this change of ownership of a company, whether small scale employment scale, came a change of approach to self-sufficiency to dependence. We almost lost the ability to take care of ourselves financially.

Most people expect an employer or the government to take care of them when they can no longer work. Or worse, they do not even think about how they could survive financially beyond this year, this month or even this week.

Basic entrepreneurship should be part of the education of each child. But we can not expect employees who teach in schools to reinforce the plate and pass the skills they lack. Like other essential life skills, like brushing your teeth, eat well and maintain relationships, teaching skills, money and business are much the parent.

It's not too late. Programs like Cash-Smart Kids give parents the tools they need to take their children financially autonomous.

Almost every entrepreneur who obtains financial independence began immediately to teach others how to do the same. Make sure your child is one of those teachers. Give them the basic skills they need, even if it means going out and learn
